As a former baker and recipe tester for cookbook writers and America's Test Kitchen, I’ve always loved creating in the kitchen. But when it comes to weeknight dinners for my family of four—two of whom are picky eaters—I tend to make things up on the spot, often heavily altering recipes as I go. The problem? I rarely write anything down. When my family asks for “that amazing dish” I made last month, I struggle to remember what I did.
This year, inspired by the desire to solve the age-old question of “what’s for dinner?” and share it on Substack, I started documenting and testing my recipes. Not only do these posts make it easier for me to recreate our family favorites, but they’ve also become a resource for readers facing similar challenges in the kitchen. Here are all the recipes I’ve shared in 2024—tested, tweaked, and ready for you to try!
The Bakes
Jenn Segal's Blueberry Coffee Cake
Ginger Rogers (the triple threat ginger cookie)
Aidan’s Cranberry White Chocolate Chip Oatmeal cookies (Aidan is my 15 year old and tested recipes for Americas Test Kitchen Children’s Cook Books and is quite the baker in his own right.)
Hermit Cookies (Snow Day Cookies)
Winter Orange Cake with Cranberry Filling & Orange Cream Cheese Icing
Dinner
Apple Cider Pulled Chicken for a Crowd
May your 2025 be delicious as we savor the last of 2024!
