I love this (especially the recipe at the end), and I agree. But I think there's another missing category – that of the emerging artist that isn't fresh out of art school. They never emerged in the first place, so they can't re-emerge. Some artists are late-bloomers, emerging only when circumstances allow or when the confidence to do so makes presents itself. Too old to apply for 'emerging artist' opportunities, and too unknown to get any recognition or support, these artists are out there, doing their work as best they can, just as they have been for years. You're never too old to emerge.
The concept of the "re-emerging artist" is so important. While I haven’t experienced it firsthand, I’ve seen how life’s interruptions can shift an artist’s path, whether it’s a personal hiatus or an unexpected career change. I love how you acknowledge that those pauses are not setbacks but moments of growth and transformation. It’s inspiring to see artists return to their practice with fresh eyes, often bringing depth and resilience that only comes from living through those challenges. This evolving journey in art is something we should celebrate more often.
I won’t re-emerge, too much has happened which prevents that from happening. But I enjoyed reading thoughts that it’s a possibility for many who have made the climb and can resume. It would certainly be worth it. I cheer you on because I know well the effort it took. But when it’s over… well, I’ve had no regrets.

Very true
What a great essay on coming back after a break! Elizabeth is also a fantastic artist and wonderful art friend.
Thank you for this. Sometimes you just need to hear “growth takes time” from a voice you never met.
